RE: Towing Capacity 2003 Windstar

Just wondering if anyone knows the weight capacity that a 2003 Ford Windstar SE has. I what it to pull a 3000lb. Pop Up. The owners Manuel is not very clear it says 2000lb to 3500lb.
Thanks Bob
Windstars only had 2 tow ratings 2000 or 3500. You will need to find out if your van has the tow package. Best bet to do that is call ford with your VIN number, they will tell you. Just because you have the 3.8 does not mean you have the tow package.
On another note windstars are prone to tranny problems. If I were to tow with one I would not tow the weight you are thinking of. Unless it was local, within an hour or so. and no hills. I would hate to see you planning a big trip and the tranny go out on you.

RE: 1st time out this year with 3/4 ton V8

If you here the whining under load it is more than likely either a bad torque converter or a front pump. Dodge had a TSB for a similar problem and the fix was to replace the converter and front pump with revised parts.
So if anything the trans needs to come out and be gone through!
And BTW, a 4.8L in a 3/4 ton van? I hope thats a typo?!
No that is not a typo. 4.8 in the vans was an option.
And yes the gears will only be heard while on decel or accel. There are many possibilities. But he did say when towing which brings me to they here nothing when normal driving. Take it to a shop and let them here it or inspect the complete driveline..

RE: 1st time out this year with 3/4 ton V8

Clutches in trannys don't whine. If you have a whine it is a gear noise. If you have not had any problems with the tranny while not towing I would bet that it is probably a raer diff and when towing you put more stress on the pinion. So if you have worn bearings or bad gears you will here under load..
As a Certified Master Automotive Technician for my creditials, I have to agree. Clutches are either fully engaged or not (unless they are slipping, but even this condition would not cause a whining noise). Yes, there is the potential of noises eminating from the rear differential area, but there are also gear trains (planetary gear sets) within the automatic transmission that can and do cause a whining noise when engaged - and this noise will increase with higher loads. As indicated by your transmission shop, it does NOT necessarily indicate a particular problem with the transmission. I am not telling you that you don't have a problem; I am simply pointing out that different makes/manufacturers have different characteristics -and I have personally heard many vehicles (not just GM) that exhibit a whining noise in the lowest gear.
I too am a technician, I do agree with the planetaries being noisy. However most newer vehicles do take steps to eliminate this noise. This is why I said that the problem will probably be in the rear diff. Diffs get overlooked alot in the service industry and bad oil can burn out bearings. Or your piion has lost its preload and as I said under load will cause a whine. On the otherhand it could be the planataries are more noticeable in low. And as I also said being a van the body will act as an amplifier.
Good luck

RE: 1st time out this year with 3/4 ton V8

This van only has 40K miles on it. I have heard a low whine every since I bought it in low gear. The wine is a lot louder when towing and the harder you get on it from a stand still the louder the whine. The shop said they couldn't find anything wrong with it.
Check the rear diff for wear on the pinion and the bearings.

RE: 1st time out this year with 3/4 ton V8

If you are hearing a whine you have a problem sounds like clutch slipping. I would bring it to tranny shop and follow their recomendations before going any
distance or you might need to get towed home I have pulled several trailers with
my E-250 and never had any tranny noise or problems but a sure sign is noise. good luck I hope it doesnt cost to much..

RE: buying ettiquette

if 22,900 is list you already offered them a good deal at 18,900 all inclusive... tell them that is your final offer and the only other thing left to do is for them to accept or reject so you can move on, to a dealer interested in actually selling their trailers... set the deadline for them and if they don't accept find a new dealer...
I pushed 3 dealers hard and none would move in price. Maybe because of the problems in the US the dealers will move more. Here the economy is good so there mentallity is if you don't buy someone else will. I believe I did what I could all that matters is I got what I believe is a good deal and I finally own my own TT 5 days in counting to pick up..

RE: buying ettiquette

I know this is a little late but you might find that dealer's work better if you present what you need up front instead of asking for a price match then adding on extra's that you need. I just realized that seemed to be what you are doing. Sorry if i am wrong.
Actually what I told them was. Dealer one offered me this I said ok but i want this too. They said no. I went to dealer two told them dealer ones offer they said they will match and then I told them I am at dealer two because dealer one would not give me waht I wanted so will you give it to me. And dealer two said no then tried to make me pay for the extra shipping they incure for getting it this far north. I said no. After haggling for alittle we agreed on a price but I lost my batteries and the price was alittle more than dealer one. I swaalowed my pride went to sign and they tried to raise the interest rate higher then dealer one. So all my time was waisted trying to save a 800 mile round trip. So back to dealer one. 19500 27BH G2 with 2 - 6 volt batteries.. You know the dealers work you just as hard as you work them.. exciting but exhausting..

RE: Generator Bargain

Like someone posted here for x amount of dollars you could make it quieter. With a little help from a small engine tech you could either buy a new muffler, or fab one up. I am going to try and find one here in canada. And I will make it quiet..

RE: Roof ladders and bike carriers

Looking for some feedback on folks using bike carriers mounted on their roof ladder. I would think the ladder could handle some amount of weight, but I'm not sure about the "bounce" factor on the ladder. Any advice would help.
Thanks in advance
Hawkfan
Not to mention most ladders are usually on the corner of the rv so your bikes would run the risk of hanging out the side of the rv.

RE: loan length

I went the longest I could to keep payments low. the interest rate was the same , now I will just throw more money at it when I have it and pay it off early
Thats what I did. The wife did not want used the whole idea of recreational vehichle took a new meaning to her when thinking used. So I went new with one that I believe is the perfect size. It sleeps 9 and we like it, don't have it yet next weekend can't wait. My thoughts are I wanted somthing with warranty reliable and nice. I have 4 kids and live in northern BC. For me to go to disneyland flying would cost me 3500 for airfare only. I can pay for my whole trip almost for that price with a TT. I 'll take the payments...

RE: loan length

In Canada I took my loan out at 15 years for about 22500. Payment is about 220.00 per month. Now I wanted to keep my payments low untill the wifes car is paid for in 3 years then I will triple to qaudruple the monthly payments but not rewrte the loan. All the extra payments will go to principle. Maybe not the best way to do it. But to put a 22500 loan over 5 years I was looking at a payment double the amount. I will pay a little more in interest but I will beable to enjoy my trailer and not leave it parked.

RE: buying ettiquette

I thought you said the local dealer had the 08 trailer you wanted there. Why would they charge you to go get it? I think I missed something, I would tell them forget it and walk away then see if they call you back. However sounds like they can't move much anymore.
I was originally dealing with a dealer 400 miles away. When they didn't give me what I wanted I tried my local dealer but don't really like them. They said they would match the dealers price of 19500 with batteries then when I told them I wanted a piece for my hitch 139.95 they put it all together and said that they had to pay 540 freight to get the trailer from the border to here 500 miles. So they told me that if I went to the other dealer it would cost me the same so they tacked on 540.. I will probably tell them to take out the piece I need give them the 19500 and be done with it...

RE: buying ettiquette

UPDATE!!!!
Well I called thew salesman. he didn't phone back so I e-mailed him. Well today when I called there it was his day off. So they put to his cell phone.. I told him I wanted the 2 6 volt batteries in the deal 1000 more off and the shank I need for the hitch and I wanted it delivered the 400 miles to my house. And told him he had untill 230 pm today to phone me or I was going to the local dealer. He phoned me 30 minutes later and told me the dealer here does not even have an 08 and told me that he was giving me good deal. Anyhow the dealer here does have an 08 lots of them. He also made his final offer of 19500 with batteries thats it. So I am at the local dealer and they say they will match the 19500 with batteries. Well I tell him I want the shank included 139.95 retail. They right up the deal I sign he then comes back with it will cost you 5-600 to get the trailer from the other dealer and it cost the local dealer 540 to get it shipped to them. So now they have added the shank but increasede the price by 540. So me being a nice guy say no but I will split with you and they said no. So I have 3 options drive800 miles to pick up trailer still buying my own shank. or paying the 540 or buy my own shank and pay the 19500 with batteries from local dealer. But I think I have hit there price. I am just pissed that he pulled the 540 trick beacause I added in 139.95.. So what you think

RE: buying ettiquette

If it is a reputable dealer I think they wouldn't have let you leave with out giving you their best deal right then and there. I know I wouldn't and if that is the case they probably don't have room left to move. I know the car market is very competitve almost cut throat from dealer to dealer. I have to believe the RV sales are the same in this economy.
I spoke to the dealer here in town and the salesman over the phone dropped to the same price I am at now. And told me that I would have to speak to the bussiness manager to get a better deal. I just don't like the dealer here in town but money is money and I would not have to drive 800 miles round trip with one nite in hotel to get it.. I have not signed anything he told me his price said no to the other stuff. I spoke to bussiness manager for financing that is done, but Istill have not signed anything.. Everything is over the phone. My thought is since financing is in place I have the power am I wrong....

RE: buying ettiquette

I am a sales and leasing consultant for a large auto group not RV's, so I know exactly how to do this. I do it all day long, and I have no problem with a customer trying to get everything they can. Sometimes a customer goes so far they lose a good deal because they are ashamed to admit I gave them the best deal and they can't come back and face me. I suggest get everything you can up front but once the deal is made thats it don't leave and then call back trying to get more. It is very rude after the deal is made to try and get more and all the free bees cost just as much as taking money off the price. Most of us just want to make a sale and will do what it takes to make it happen. When you leave my store you got the rock bottom price it won't get better after you leave. Trust me we want to sell as bad as you want to buy. Good luck hope it helps
So you are saying leave it?? or are you saying go back but once you both agree don't go back for more??

buying ettiquette

Ok, the trailer I am buying is 22900 I originally told him I wanted to pay 18900 with controller and WD hitch included. They said no to that and they will go 19900 on the trailer and I have to pay for my controller and wd hitch. Financing is all done I just have to sign, But my hitch does not come with a shank and I don't want to buy cause I don't know what size. So I was going to buy one from them. Also I want two 6 volt batteries instead of the 12 volt they give. So after thinking about it. I e-mailed him and told him that the local Jayco dealer matched there price and I can still negotiate. I told them I wanted the shank and batteries included and that I wanted a better deal. Am I wrong or should I accept price and insist on those little things being included..
